3/5/2010 — The Kahoks fell to the Tigers of Edwardsville in the Alton 4A Regional Championship last Friday night 51 to 32. The loss ended the Kahok season as they finished the year at 20 and 10 winning twenty games for the first time since the 2001-2002 season. The Kahoks have now not tasted a Regional Championship since the 2005-2006 season.
The Kahoks started off slow in the first quarter and were able to stay fairly close thanks to Deonta Smith's 5 first quarter points. The Kahoks trailed 16 to 11 after the first quarter with the Tigers getting very balanced scoring from six different players. In the second quarter Smith continued his good first half with four more points, but he would not score in the second half and the Tigers once again outscored the Purple and White 9 to 7 in the quarter. Austin Ash struggled to get going in the first half, as he did not even attempt a shot in the first 16 minutes of the game and Robbie Fernandez only had 3 points at half time.
At the beginning of the third quarter things got real interesting with the Tigers holding a seven point lead. They took the opening possession and began to stall and hold the ball at half court. The Kahoks remained back on defense for a good three minutes before they extended their defense to force the action. The Tigers than began to attack offensively periodically the rest of the quarter with some success, but it never allowed the Kahoks to get into any flow offensively as they were outscored 8 to 0 in the quarter and saw their 7 point deficit grow to a 15 point hole.
In the fourth quarter the Kahoks could not dent into the double-digit Tiger lead and really never made a run at the Tigers. The Kahoks continued their lack of efficiency on offense, which bothered them the entire night.
Scoring for the Kahoks on night: Robbie Fernandez 10, Deonta Smith 9, Daryn Foster 6, Austin Ash 2, and Tre Lewis 5. This loss ended the careers for three seniors, Robbie Fernandez, Austin Ash, and Brian Kusnerick, who got the Kahoks back on track as far as winning ways.

3/3/2010 — The Kahoks moved on to the IHSA 4A Alton Regional Championship with a thrilling 49 to 43 overtime victory over fellow Southwestern Conference foe the Redbirds of Alton on Wednesday night. Alton jumped on the Kahoks to start the game 6 to 2, but then a 10 to 0 run to finish the quarter gave the Kahoks a lead they would hold going into halftime. Hot shooting from the 3-point line was key in the first half with Austin Ash busting loose for two of those baskets. The Kahoks took a 23 to 12 lead into the locker room at halftime as they had the previous two years facing Alton in the Regional Semi-Final game.
In the third quarter, the Redbirds turned up the defensive pressure and forced seven turnovers in the quarter. Things started to look real familiar to Kahok defeats of the past two years to the Redbirds. The Redbirds began the quarter on a 10 to 0 run to get right back in the game. The Kahoks struggled to score in the third quarter and had trouble getting second leading scorer, Robbie Fernandez, the ball all night.
In the final frame, things remained close with Alton even taking a lead. Deonta Smith scored a big 3-point play with just over a minute left in regulation to tie the game. Alton would hold the ball for the last shot and LaVaughn McDouglar's open 3-pointer was an air ball sending the game into overtime. In overtime a huge 3-point bucket from point guard Tre Lewis gave the Kahoks the lead for good and the Purple and White made eight of eight free throws in the final 90 seconds to seal the win. Free throw shooting was key to the win as the Kahoks hit 13 of 15 on the night.
Scoring for the Kahoks: Daryn Foster 14 , Robbie Fernandez 4, Austin Ash 11, Tre Lewis 5, Jaris Wellmaker 3, Deonta Smith 12 points.
Kahoks will be back in action on Friday night at Alton in the Regional Championship game vs. the Edwardsville Tigers. Tip-off set for 7:30 pm. The win moved the Kahok record to 20 and 9 on the year.

2/26/2010 — The Kahoks finished the regular season with a nice 61 to 55 road win over the Maroons of Belleville West Friday night. The Kahoks busted out to a quick 8 to 0 lead to take command of the game against an all senior lineup for Belleville West. The Maroons righted the ship with an outstanding second quarter by outscoring the Kahoks 18 to 5 to take a 24 to 18 lead in at half.
In the third quarter, that was back and forth at first, the Kahoks turned things around behind Daryn Foster’s nine third quarter points to give the Kahoks a 36 to 31 lead heading into the final frame. Seven Maroon turnovers was their downfall in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Kahoks kept their lead despite some poor free throw shooting once again down the stretch to get the big road win. Five 3-point baskets by the Maroons in the quarter kept them within striking distance.
Scoring for the Kahoks: Robbie Fernandez 20, Daryn Foster 17, Deonta Smith 11, Jaris Wellmaker 5, Austin Ash 4 and Tre Lewis 4.
The Kahoks will be back in action Wednesday, March 3rd in the IHSA 4A Alton Regional vs. the host school. The Kahoks swept the Redbirds this year in both meetings. Game time 7:30 pm.
The Kahok JV squad lost their final game of the year 51 to 49 to finish the year at 8 and 8 and 6 and 8 in the Southwestern Conference.
